Railway Photographs
Welcome
Welcome to my 'Fotopic' site, which I hope you will enjoy viewing - it is regularly updated, so please visit again to see the newest addtions.

The aim of this site is to display a broad selection of railway photos, covering variations in classes, and livery details. For the smaller classes, the whole class may feature; for larger ones, then a representative selection is displayed, to avoid being over-run with similar images.

'Home' is on the ECML, but trips around the UK have provided opportunities to cover most other areas. In addition, there are a selection from visits to: France, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, India, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.

Thanks is due to the individuals who post advance info on unusual workings, on the various 'gen' groups.

The photographs are generally taken using Canon EOS D-SLRs. A small pocket Digital camera is also used, and older images have been scanned from slides, negatives and prints.

This collection holds a portfolio of my images that have been 'in print' - many thanks to the various Editors who have kindly selected these images for inclusion.

Permission has been granted for a couple of 'Not-for-profit' Railway Societies to use specific images in their publications - please contact me if your society would benefit from using any of the images on this website.
    New Photos (46 images) Updated
This contains my latest images, prior to them being moved to the appropriate collections.
    01. Steam Locomotives (199 images)
Steam Locomotives, predominantly Mainline Steam specials and Heritage Railways. Locos are grouped under the 'Big 4', apart from some very early pioneers, the 'BR' designs, and some industrial locos.
    02. Diesel Locomotives (Shunters) (40 images)
A wide variety of Shunters were constructed, but the 08/09 are now the only remaining ones in active service; other designs survive on industrial and preserved lines.
    03. Diesel Locomotives (Type 1: 800 - 1000hp) (22 images)
The Type 1 covered Classes 15 to 20; only the '20' has really survived, with many still in mainline service with DRS, over 50 years since introduction.
    04. Diesel Locomotives (Type 2: 1001 - 1499hp) (40 images)
Classes 21 - 31, introduced during the 'Modernisation Plan', are now a scarce sight. Some 31s survive in active service, and several of the classes have good representation on the UK's Preserved Railways.
    05. Diesel Locomotives (Type 3: 1500 – 1999hp) (76 images)
Classes 33 - 37; the Diesel-Hydraulic Hymeks were shortlived, but the 33s and 37s have proved popular, and several are still in use.
    06. Diesel Locomotives (Type 4: 2000 – 2999hp) (177 images)
The Type 4's included the Class 40s, Warships(41,42,43), Peaks (44,45,46), the large fleet of Class 47s, the popular 50s and 52s. While most of these classes were withdrawn by the end of the 1980s, the 47s still survive with some operators.
    07. Diesel Locos (Type 5: 3000hp+ ) - Classes 55 - 60 (168 images)
The Type 5 was originally the preserve of the 'Deltics'. These were supplemented by the 56 and 58 fleets, followed by the 59s and 60s, and then the 57 conversions. [66/67s are in separate collections]
    08. Diesel Locos (Type 5: 3000hp+) - Class 66 (179 images)
In the late 1990s, the '66' was introduced, which has since become the standard locomotive for Freight Operators, with several hundred of the class in service, alongwith other examples in Europe.

A representative selection of the EWS/Freightliner fleets are shown, while the majority of the smaller pools of GBRf* and DRS locos are included. [Only 66730 missing!]
    09. Diesel Locos (Type 5: 3000hp) - Class 67 (93 images)
The 125mph-capable Class 67 was introduced for high speed Mail Services, but was quickly displaced from this role.

They have since found use on many duties including: ECML Thunderbirds, Railtours, Royal Train, Stock Moves, RHTT, EWS 'Executive Train' and Wrexham-London services.

28 out of the 30-strong class are featured in this collection, on a wide-variety of workings. Only 67004 and 18 are yet to be recorded on camera....
    10. InterCity 125 / HST (134 images)
Features both the Prototype and Production Prototype 'High Speed Train'. Includes the 'DVT' conversions, use on the New Measurement Train, and a wide variety of liveries.
    11. DC Electric Locomotives (31 images)
Southern Region Classes 71 and 73 were 3rd-rail based, the latter also fitted with a small diesel engine making them very versatile. The 76 and 77 designs faded with the closure of the Woodhead line. The Class 73s outlived the other designs and some are still actively used, including with GBRf and Network Rail.
    12. AC Electric Locos - Classes 81 - 87 (158 images)
The fleet of Classes 81 - 87 were the standard traction for WCML services for many years, being enlarged as electrification was extended. For many years they carried BR Blue, eventually being displaced by 'Sector' liveries, and then Privatisation colours.
    13. AC Electric Locos - Class 89 (10 images)
Dedicated to the unique Brush-built Co-Co locomotive, that has now been preserved by the ACLG. After just a handful of years, it was withdrawn by Bristish Rail, preserved, and brought back into mainline use by GNER. It was finally withdrawn again, and the ACLG have preserved it, repainting it back into it's original livery.
    14. AC Electric Locos - Class 90 (92 images)
Originally designated 87/2s, these have been used on the WCML, ECML and GEML, on passenger, mail and freight workings. They have carried a vast array of liveries, and despite being displaced by the Pendelinos, have a good future ahead of them.
    15. AC Electric Locos - Class 91 (92 images)
The powerful 91s (providing over 6000hp) operate with Mk4s on the ECML; Recent years have seen them refurbished and reclassified to 91/1, providing improvements to their reliability.
The unique slab-end 'No 2 Cab' allows a smooth connection with the Mk4s, but can be used in the event of TDM failures.

These operate through my local area, and most are included in this collection.
    16. AC Electric Locos - Class 92 (33 images)
Build for operation through the Channel Tunnel, the Dual-Voltage design took many years to gain widespread route acceptance. Now seen along the length of the WCML and ECML, plus SR routes to France
    17. Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) (233 images)
From Scotland to the West Country, a range of DMUs including first-generation, along with newer types such as Desiro, Voyager and Meridians.
    18. Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) (224 images)
A vast array of classes and liveries; this collection contains both AC and DC EMU classes, but excludes Eurostar units.
    19. Channel Tunnel - Eurostars (163 images)
One of my favourite classes, this collection features 66* out of the 77 Class 373 Eurostars powercars, including images of:
    - 3rd Rail and HS1 services
    - Workings at Paris, Brussels, Waterloo and StPancras Terminals
    - 373/3 on WCML tests, GNER White Rose and SNCF services
    - TGV Branded units for French domestic services
    - Detail photos of Eurostar vehicle types

    *Includes: 3001-3022, 3102/05-08, 3201/02/05-13/15/16/18/19/21-24/26-32, 3301-6/09-14, 3999
    20. Channel Tunnel - Nightstar Stock (7 images)
The ill-fated 'Nightstar' stock, now used in Canada. International Sleeper services designed to be hauled by 92s and 37/6s, the project was curtailed by the advent of 'budget airlines'.

These images were taken while the stock was stored at MOD Kineton during a railtour visit in 2000.
    21. Channel Tunnel - Eurotunnel Locos/Stock (14 images)
    Includes:
    - Many of the Tri-Bo fleet (90xx, 91xx, 97xx, 98xx)
    - Car and Lorry rolling stock
    - Channel Tunnel construction images
[Photography of the 'Shuttle' Locos is very difficult, with few available vantage points!]
Update Soon: Many more photos due to be added to this collection
    22. Coaching Stock (81 images)
Some of the various carriages, including DVTs, used across the British network
    23. Freight and Departmental Stock (56 images)
    24. Light Railways (67 images)
    Featuring:
    - London Underground
    - Docklands Light Railway
    - Tyne+Wear Metro
    - Tramways from Croydon, Manchester, Nottingham, Sheffield and West Midlands.
    25. British Railways - Miscellaneous (24 images)
    Belgium Railways (26 images)
A couple of winter trips by Eurostar to Brussels provided a variety of motive power, including 7 different electric locomotive classes.
    French Railways (70 images)
Visited Paris several times; variety of locomotive types and liveries, along with the different TGV versions; includes shots of record breaking units TGV-16 (380kmh) and TGV-325 (515kmh).

    [Eurostars contained in separate collection]
    German Railways (134 images)
Visits to Berlin and Hamburg, managing to capture many freight and passenger workings, including several ICE versions. The staff are relaxed with photography, and a large volume of loco-hauled services dominate the scene.
    Indian Railways (62 images)
A brief visit to Delhi in 2006 provided the opportunity to capture some images of the Indian Railway network, and a visit to the Indian Railway Museum.
Irish Railways (including Northern Ireland) (108 images)
Several visits to Dublin, plus a trip on the Enterprise to Belfast. Covers most stock used since 1999, including 071, 121, 141, 181 and 201 classes, alongwith the DMUs, DART units and the Coaching Stock
    Kazakhstan Railways (20 images)
Some travels in Kazakhstan, with the ex-USSR locomotive designs very prevalent.
    Poland Railways (90 images)
A short visit to Krakow and Tarnow, including a small PKP Gala at Krakow station.

    Includes classes EU06, EU07, EP07, EP09, ET21, ET22, ET41, SM42, plus multiple-units and rolling stock.

Plus ex-Romanian Diesels and a CD electric loco.
    Romania Railways (24 images)
From the 1995 to 2003 period, several visits to Northern Romania provided the opportunity to take these images; both passenger and freight workings are displayed.
    Sweden Railways (20 images)
Day visit to Göteborg, with RC3, RC6, X2000 and EMUs present. Also includes international workings from Denmark and Norway.
    Swiss Railways (1 images)
Just a single image, captured in Germany of a SBB loco!
    Ukraine Railways (69 images)
Shots from two trips to a busy Kiev Central station, with plenty of action from diesel ChME3s in pilot duties, to various electric locomotive classes on long-distance workings, plus scenes from Kiev Electric Depot.
